About City of Golden Temple

Amritsar city of Golden temple is the capital of Punjab. This is one of the ancient cities of India. Amritsar city is the main seat of Sikh history and culture. The word Amritsar means " holy pool of nectar". In this you shal get many historical and religious sites. Among them famous one is Golden Temple which was founded by the fourth sikh Guru , Guru Ramdas. Places of Tourist Interest :

Golden Temple
Golden Temple is the one of the most famous Sikh religious shrines situated in Amritsar. Maharaja Ranjit Singh was the major donar of money and materials to built this beautiful shrine. Lower half of the part of this shrine decorated with marble and upper part is covered by Gold plates. Beautiful location of this temple inside the holy lake attracts many tourists to visit it.

Akal Takht    
This another holy shrine of the Sikhs. This was built in 1609 as the most holy seat of the Sikhs’ spiritual governing body. The Holy book of the Sikhs “ Granth Sahib “ is carried in procession to its bed at Akal Takht. This procession is very interesting to visit. Early in the morning it brings from Akal Takht and by the night is carried in procession to its bed at Akal Takht.

In this procession a palanquin (Palki) gilded with gold and silver is used to carry this Holy book of the Sikhs “ Granth Sahib “.Fresh silk brocade, coverings and cushions are laid in the Palki. Then scented rose water is sprinkled. The head priest (head Granthi) appears with Guru Granth Sahib Ji on a cushion on his head and the worshippers bow their heads. He places Granth Sahib Ji on the cushions of Palki Sahib. Hymns accompanied with drums, nagaras fill the air with rhythm, music and piousness. There are so many people gather this time to visit it. 

Jallianwala Bagh      
This is one of the historical sites to visit in Punjab. Located at the outskirts of Golden temple. In this place near about 2000 people were attending a peaceful meeting during the freedom movement fell under the bullets of the British General Dyer on 13 April 1919 and the city of Amritsar.       

Border Retreat Ceremony at Wagah Border           
This ceremony takes place everyday by late afternoon on the India – Pakistan border at Wagah in Amritsar. Wagha is the only land border open between Pakistan and India. This daily beating retreat ceremony and the change of guard within handshaking distance of the Indian and Pakistani forces here makes the most charming of the spectacles as a daily evening drill.

Amritsar is well connected by road, rail and by flight. Amrisar is well connected by road from Delhi, Dharamsala, Jammu and others. This also very well connected by Indian rail. As there are regular many trains are operating from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata . Amritsar is also connected by train to Lahore at Pakistan as the Samjhauta Express runs between India and Pakistan.

Gurupurbs
This festival celebrated throughout the world by the Sikh followers. Traditionally celebrated in November or January. These are celebrated on the occasion of the birthdays and martyrdoms of Sikh Gurus. Birthday of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Guru Ram Das Ji and Guru Gobind Singh Sahib are celebrated with great devotion in Amritsar.

Ram Tirath Fair
Ram Tirath Fair is organized at Ram Tirath, situated at a distance of 11 kilometers from Amritsar city. This five day long annual fair, held on the full moon day in the month of November, is an important religious event of the city. During the fair, Pilgrims visit the Temple to plunge in the sacred tank of the Temple in the early hours of the Puranmashi (full moon night). Women light lamps of pure ghee (deshi ghee) or mustard oil (sarson ka tel) made from kneaded flour and put them in tank by placing them on leaf plates. It is believed that this ceremony absolves one's sins and is known as tulla toarna (meaning floating of tullas). Throughout the ceremony devotional songs and hymns are recited.

Diwali
Diwali is celebrated with great pomp and show at the Golden Temple. It is celebrated even after three days of Diwali. It is believed that Mughal emperor Jahangir arrested the sixth Guru of Sikhs, Guru Hargobind Sahib, mistakenly. He was kept in Gwalior Fort. Later on realising his mistake, Jahangir repented and agreed to release Guru Sahib. returned to Amritsar where grand celebrations were held. People greeted him by illuminating lamps. The day coincided with Hindu festival Diwali.
